After running from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, Pheidippides proclaimed: "Nenikékamen! Nenikékamen!" (or "Victory! We are Victorious!") before dying of exhaustion. The athletic footwear company Nike derived its name from this inspired act of an early Greek foot messenger.
